Companhia Maior is a creative project in the area of contemporary performing arts, developed with elderly artists. Launched in 2010, at the initiative of Lu\u00edsa Taveira, Companhia promotes creativity in the elderly, working with several generations of creators in the interdisciplinary context of contemporary creation.<\/p>\n

Renowned artists, including Tiago Rodrigues, Clara Andermatt, M\u00f3nica Calle, Tim Etchells, Jorge Andrade, Pedro Penim, Joana Craveiro, Sofia Dias and V\u00edtor Roriz, have created original works for Companhia Maior, highlighting the uniqueness of the cast and their capacity for expression and communication.<\/p>\n

Companhia Maior\u2019s innovative character sparks important debate about active ageing in Portuguese society and the role of art and culture in seeking effective solutions for a full social life.<\/p>\n

Companhia Maior is active on a regular basis and is involved with training in various subjects and formats linked to the creations it produces.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Companhia Maior is composed of artists who, for the most part, are over sixty years old and have backgrounds in diverse sectors of artistic and cultural activity. Created in 2010, at the initiative of Lu\u00edsa Taveira, with the mission of promoting creativity in the elderly, Companhia has worked with several generations of creators in the interdisciplinary context of contemporary creation. Companhia Maior is active on a regular basis and is involved with training in various subjects and formats linked to the creations it produces.<\/p>

The company\u2019s first show, Sleeping Beauty<\/em><\/strong>, with script and stage direction by Tiago Rodrigues, opened at the CCB in 2010 with a cast of 14 performers selected through audition. This was followed in 2011 by Maior<\/em><\/strong> (Greater), choreographed by Clara Andermatt, this time with 17 artists in the cast, and in 2012 by Ilumina\u00e7\u00f5es<\/em><\/strong> (Illuminations), brought to the stage by M\u00f3nica Calle.<\/p>

In 2013, Companhia Maior took part in a production of The Visit<\/em><\/strong>, directed by Nuno Cardoso, which opened in S\u00e3o Luiz Teatro Municipal. The play was a co-production by this theatre, Ao Cabo Teatro, Companhia Maior and the Centro Cultural Vila Flor, and was also performed in the Centro Cultural Vila Flor, in Guimar\u00e3es, and Teatro Nacional de S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o, in Porto. In October of the same year, the company took part in the Maratona 10 anos 10 horas<\/em><\/strong> (10-year 10-hour Marathon), at Maria Matos Teatro Municipal, in Lisbon, an event marking the 10th anniversary of the theatre companies Mala Voadora and Mundo Perfeito and the 44th anniversary of the theatre. Shortly afterwards, still in 2013, it presented a new co-production with the CCB, Estalo Novo<\/em><\/strong> (New Snap), a creation by Ana Borralho and Jo\u00e3o Galante.<\/p>

With an enlarged cast of 27 performers, the company premi\u00e8red two new shows almost simultaneously in Lisbon in October 2014. The first of these was The best fastest worst saddest longest most complex hardest funniest<\/em><\/strong>, written by Tim Etchells and directed by Jorge Andrade, presented at the CCB, and the second was Um de n\u00f3s<\/em><\/strong> (One of us), directed by Peter Vandenbempt and performed in Maria Matos Teatro Municipal.<\/p>

At the end of that year, Companhia Maior made its international d\u00e9but with the presentation of Estalo Novo<\/em><\/strong> (New Snap) at the MA sc\u00e8ne national, in Montb\u00e9liard, France.<\/p>

This was followed, in 2015, by For\u00e7a<\/em><\/strong> (Strength), with artistic direction by Filipa Francisco, then in 2016 by A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream<\/em><\/strong>, directed by T\u00f3nan\u00a0Quito, in 2017 by Humor Maligno<\/em><\/strong> (Malign Humour), staged by Pedro Penim, and in 2018 by Mapa Mundi<\/em><\/strong>, directed by Joana Craveiro, all in co-production with the CCB. In parallel, in 2018, Companhia Maior presented Dizer\u2026 as palavras dos poetas <\/em><\/strong>(Speaking… the words of poets), directed by Miguel Azguime, in the Espa\u00e7o O\u2019culto and at Passos Manuel Secondary School, as part of European Literature Night, and, in 2019, presented Cord\u00e9is Minimalistas<\/em><\/strong> (Minimalist Strings), directed by Jo\u00e3o Mota, in Comuna Teatro de Pesquisa and F\u00f3rum Cultural Jos\u00e9 Manuel Figueiredo, in Moita.<\/p>

Companhia Maior has presented its productions in cultural spaces and venues throughout Portugal, including Teatro Municipal de\u00a0Bragan\u00e7a, Cine-Teatro de Estarreja, TEMPO \u2013 Teatro Municipal de Portim\u00e3o, Centro Cultural Vila Flor (Guimar\u00e3es), Teatro Viriato (Viseu), TeCa \u2013 Teatro Carlos Alberto (Porto), Teatro Micaelense (Ponta Delgada), Teatro Virg\u00ednia (Torres Novas), Teatro Municipal da Guarda, Casa da Cultura de Alf\u00e2ndega\u00a0da F\u00e9, Centro de Espet\u00e1culos (Tr\u00f3ia), Teatro Municipal Joaquim Benite (Almada), Teatro Gil Vicente (Coimbra), Teatro-Cine de Torres Vedras, Teatro Aveirense, FIL \u2013 Feira Internacional de Lisboa, Espa\u00e7o O\u2019culto da Ajuda, Passos Manuel Secondary School, Comuna Teatro de Pesquisa and F\u00f3rum Cultural Jos\u00e9\u00a0Manuel Figueiredo.<\/p>
